Experimental study of natural cork and cork agglomerates as a substitute for expanded polystyrene foams under compressive loads

چکیده
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is a material that widely used in energy absorbing applications, especially helmets, despite its non-renewable origin. Cork and derivatives, however, are proposed as substitute for foam due to their renewable origin easy recyclability. In spite of the low-environmental footprint cork there insufficient data on mechanical behaviour. Consequently, under dynamic quasi-static loads, four different-density EPS, natural five different products with grain sizes heat treatments were tested. They compared terms stress–strain specific curve, volumetric capability absorb energy, average decelerations peak deceleration. Finally, EPS foams cannot recover initial shape upon deformation low resilience capability. This important applications such which bound be subjected multiple impacts. However, could have this would therefore more suitable certain applications.

Oxidized Xanthan Gum and Chitosan as Natural Adhesives for Cork
Natural cork stopper manufacturing produces a significant amount of cork waste, which is granulated and combined with synthetic glues for use in a wide range of applications. There is a high demand for using biosourced polymers in these composite materials. In this study, xanthan gum (XG) and chitosan (CS) were investigated as possible natural binders for cork. Xanthan gum was oxidized at two d...
متن کاملCork: a strategic material
Cork is a material whose applications have been known since Antiquity, especially in floating devices and as stopper for beverages, mainly wine, whose market, from the early twentieth century, had a massive expansion, particularly due to the development of several cork based agglomerates (Gil, 2011). Cork is closely related to the maintenance of biodiversity, the heart of sustainable developmen...
متن کاملCork Composites: A Review
Cork is a material which has been used for mankind for the last 5,000 years and it is a strategic material used for multiple applications, from wine bottles to aeronautics. Many of current cork materials are composites, in particular cork materials for floor and wall coverings and several other building and industrial applications. Recent developments in cork research have shifted from the clas...
متن کاملPermeability of cork for water and ethanol.
Transport properties of natural (noncompressed) cork were evaluated for water and ethanol in both vapor and liquid phases. The permeability for these permeants has been measured, as well as the sorption and diffusion coefficients. This paper focuses on the differences between the transport of gases' relevant vapors and their liquids (water and ethanol) through cork. A transport mechanism of vap...
متن کاملCork: Sustainability and New Applications
Cork is a strategic material used in multiple applications and its use has accompanied mankind since the days of Ancient Egypt. The cork oak forests are extremely well adapted to the semi-arid regions of southern Europe and northern Africa (western Mediterranean). These forests help to prevent the advance of desertification, improve water penetration into the soil and hydrological regulation, p...
